How to Make a Pirates Costume
So you want to make a Pirates Costume for Halloween.
Pirates costumes are fairly easy to make and can be put together in a flash. If you have a crowded wardrobe you may find you have the basics already. If not, a quick trip to a second hand clothing shop will get you started.
What you are going to need is –
- Old jeans or trousers – preferably black – and remember, the older the better
- Boots – these will also work better if they are well aged
- Shirt – either a horizontal striped T-shirt or a baggy white or cream button up shirt – again, an old shirt will work best
- A wide black or brown belt with a big buckle
- Bandana – red is best
- Cardboard
- Paint
- Elastic
To make a start you need to make a mess of the jeans. They should be cut off below the knee. Don’t cut them straight – make it a messy jagged cut. Make a few tears at the bottom, and a rip or two in the leg will look good. When you have done that throw them in the wash to get the tears to fray a bit.
The shirt can be used as is, or roughed up a bit. If you are using a button up shirt, the collar can be torn off. The cuffs could also be cut off and some elastic used.
If you can’t find the right belt, the bandana can be used around your waist. It looks good if it is tied around the waist and one end hangs down to the knees.
Make an eye patch out of some thin cardboard. Paint it black and use the elastic to tie it on.
Cardboard from a packing box can be used to make a cutlass. A bit of thought and a touch of paint should result in classy looking weapon. Try some aluminium foil wrapped around the cardboard for the blade.
Some gold or silver jewellery will look good. Neck chains and hooped earrings are the choice of most pirates.
To finish the costume off you should consider a tattoo on the forearm. Also some brown and grey face paints to the arms and face will give you that sun and wind burned look.
Remember that pirates never worried too much about their appearance, and washing their clothes was not high on their priority list.

Thanks for the tips. Im sure a heap of people will find them useful this year. If you dont hhave the clothes you need to get started, you can often pic up some old jeans or a shirt at second hand shops for just a dollar or two. This is a great costume, especially in the middle of a financial crisis!

Pirates are always a good choice for costumes. You can make one at home or pick one up inexpensively. Particlarly like the accessory of a tattoo. Maybe they should start with the rub on kind first.

Very useful information for folks on a budget. After reading the directions, I realized I could probably pass for a pirate without much effort! There’s a lot of similarities between pirates and bikers too, for that matter.

It’s easy enough to buy or make a sexy pirate costume, too. For example, a typical sexy costume for a woman pirate could be a white body fitting short satin and lace dress with a ruffled hemline. Great for halloween or any other time!!
